Troubleshooting: remote session getting locked up (Windows UAC)

When you are using DeskRoll Remote Support application, sometimes remote sessions may lock up. This happens when on the remote machine an application is run that requires elevated permissions.

Note: to avoid UAC popups you can use DeskRoll Unattended Access application.

Start as admin is a button that requests user permission elevation on the remote machine. When the button is clicked, the user on the remote machine is prompted to enter admin credentials. Note that you will temporarily lose remote control until the user clicks Yes in the popup displayed by Windows UAC.

You may as well choose to work without using Start as admin. You can find this function in the left-hand menu. Below we consider the cases when Start as admin can be used.

UAC is enabled

Start as admin is available and requires remote user's confirmation.

UAC is disabled

Start as Admin is inactive and not required to run programs.

User with admin permissions

Start as Admin is inactive and not required to run programs.

User without admin permissions

Start as Admin is available and requires remote user's confirmation. The following cases are the exceptions:

  1. UAC is turned off.
  2. DeskRoll app is run as admin on Windows XP.
  3. DeskRoll app is run under High integrity level (and UAC is turned on).
