RE: Windows 10, so eager to get to your PC. Again

We traditionally welcome the new mildly obtrusive offer from Microsoft. This time, of course, we are urged to upgrade to Windows 10. Not only are we urged, but rather Windows 10 makes broadband haste to our PCs, without much ado (or permission).

We couldn’t let this pass unattended, so here’s a quick how-to on removing the unwelcome guest.

  1. First things first. To avoid getting tricked into downloading “recommended” updates, open Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Windows Update -> Change settings. Disable Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.
  2. Open CMD and start the update removal script (below). Feel free to make a .bat file to do the job.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Open dialog from Step 1 and click Check for updates.
  5. If you see updates from the stop list (below), then hide them in the Installed updates list.
  6. If you still want recommended updates, enable Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.
  7. On April 5th, be ready for a new portion of generous Windows 10 offers (traditionally sent on every 1st Tuesday each month).

Note that sometimes Microsoft releases updates with the same KB number but with a later release date. You hide the little culprits (Step 5) each time they are released.
